Hermeneutics and Exegesis What is the difference?

Many people are confused about the words hermeneutics and exegetics.  They both refer to intepreting texts but what is the difference between the two terms? The answer is that one describes the actual action of interpretation and the other describes the method and rules that are used.  Exegesis is the act of interpreting and so when one explains or interperets scripture they are doing exegetics or they are being an exegete.  The lens or viewpoint that one applies to the exegesis is hermeneutics.  There are many different lenses that can be applied to scripture interpretation.  There is grammatical-historical hermeneutic, redemptive-historical hermeneutic, and there is the hermeneutic used by the Rabbinic Sages of the first century. These are but a few of the many hermeneutical lenses is use throughout the centuries of Christian History.  Our classes help put information like this in perspective to give you a better understanding of these terms and how they are used by theologians.
